To add the illusion of movement, I added some mud splash around the boots.
I cut tiny triangle/wedges out of transparent paper. Glued the pieces around the boot and covered the wedges w/ a mixture of 3 minute epoxy glue and a tiny drob of burnt umber acrylic paint. I then manipulated the glue to give it that "splash" look.
I'll go back now and paint the boots a more darker color and give it a little wash of gloss varnish.

Wilder's Mounted Infantry

This is a soldier of the 72nd Indiana, part of Wilder's Mounted Infantry Brigade. They were uniformed with cavalry style jackets but devoid of the yellow trim. Their trousers were of mounted pattern with re-enforced inner leg for saddle wear.
I chose to portray him as he may have looked at the Battle of Chickamauga. He carries a Joslyn or Burnside style cartridge box for his Spencer repeating rifle. His canteen is kept close, with his haversack and other gear strapped on his horse.
The figure was sculpted with Pro-Create. The putty is very similiar to Duro but is grey and is a little more sticky, which makes cutting a straight edge difficult. It's also tough to sand. The strong point is that it sticks and blends to cured putty wonderfully.
