Frederic Remington's "The Cowboy" Painted!

I have to admit, this my most satisfying mounted piece to date. It was one of those rare pieces where every stage of the project was enjoyable to do, from sculpting, posing the armature and painting. I plan on another Remington inspired "Cowboy" shortly.

The angle of the groundwork in relation to the pose was very important. My goal, like Remington's painting, is to give the viewer that "roller-coaster" feel in their gut when looking at it. Giving the horse a tilt is not for the faint of heart. Too little of a tilt will not show fast motion. Too much tilt will look like the horse and rider are going to crash. Needless to say there was a lot of playing with the horse to get that nice balance.

Here's another ambitious mounted piece. This is based on a painting by Frederic Remington. The horse is from Airfix, the "2nd Dragoon 1815 (Scots Greys)" kit. I initially chose this horse because of the animation. But, I found the kit pose alone was not enough to reflect Remington's horse, so I had to do major reconstruction to the legs and neck. Yes, "Frankenhorse" is back.

2nd Continental Dragoon Painted!

Here's my version of a 2nd Continental dragoon from the AWI. The uniform is a cross between the McBarron and Troiani studies. The figure is painted with acrylics.

New Paint Rack

Time for a change. As you can see there is not much elbow room with my paint carousel in the way. While I endured the necessary obstacle for years, I decided to make something more display functional and still easy to reach. Some cheap lumber ($15-$20) and an afternoon of constructing, I came up with this. I had to cut down on the amount of bottles (many duplicates) but this makes a paint selection much easier.

I would like to thank those with the recent inquiries about commissions and commercial offers. I do appreciate the interest in my pieces, but my workload is currently full.

2nd Continental Dragoon AWI

Here's the finished sculpt of an American Dragoon during the American Revolution. The subject is loosely based on studies by H.Charles McBarron Jr. and Don Troiani. The sculpture 54mm in scale and the putty used is a mix of Aves and Duro epoxy putty. The Shenandoh rifle is heavly coverted to make a French musket.

Sorry, I couldn't come up with a better title for this post. Anyway, while I enjoy using the Hornet line of heads, I feel sometimes the need to flex my face sculpting muscles. I wanted somewhat of an extreme expression so I went with a sneer. This is the kind of sneer that a soldier might use while taking aim. I used Kneadatite/Duro for it's longer working time. I hope this expression is convincing to the viewer.

APG 2013 Auction Piece Painted!

Here's my piece that will be donated to the Artist Preservation Group auction being held at the MFCA show this coming May. If you recall, this is mainly a Historex conversion. The only scratch-built items are the arms. The torso, legs(slight alteration) and head(Nemrod) are stock pieces. It was a quick build and a good workout with "whites". I really like how this one turned out and I hope it does well for the APG's efforts.
